He was Lincoln’s brilliant Secretary of the Navy and a faithful diarist. Much of what we know about Lincoln’s cabinet comes from Welles’ diary. Referred to by Lincoln as “my Neptune,” Welles built a Navy that helped with the war and came to love and admire his Commander in Chief.
