As you read the memories of the 11th New York, you’ll see it’s unique. This is veterans writing for each other and leaving very little out, rather than writing for posterity and sanitizing the stories. They acted for a while as Abraham Lincoln’s body guard and had great stories to tell about their time with him that you’ll read nowhere else.
You’ll enjoy great humor in the stories, as well as incredible stories of heroism, but the value of “Scott’s 900” is its level of detail. If you have ever wondered what life was like in the Union cavalry, you’ll get a sense of it here, the bad, the awful, the frightening, and the miserable.
