S.A. McNeil’s recounting of his time with the 31st Ohio Volunteers is a simple soldier’s memoir. He manages to stuff more action, emotion, and humor into this short book than many longer books written by more educated veterans. He experienced great fear, determination, and was severely wounded at Missionary Ridge. He was quite convinced while bleeding on the ground, that his last breath was near.
