Almost fifty years after they served together in the 4th U.S. Cavalry with General Ranald Mackenzie, two old soldiers rediscovered each other. One of them was a writer: Captain Robert G. Carter. He kept and published this remarkable correspondence between the two men along with background on their military campaigns in the wild and dangerous country that was Texas in the 1870s.
