Fresh out of Harvard Divinity School, Charles Humphreys joined the Second Massachusetts Cavalry as chaplain. Erudite, eloquent, and keenly aware of the history being made around him in the field, Humphreys left one of the most interesting memoirs of the American Civil War. Humphreys saw much of Grant’s Overland Campaign and he lost a younger brother at Cold Harbor. There are many fascinating anecdotes of the famous men among whom he served.
